Asbestos Disposal Options

Published On

Effective immediately, asbestos disposal at the Campbell River Waste Management Center is unavailable until further notice. Residents and licensed waste haulers of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) can use the Regional District of Nanaimo’s (RDN) solid waste facilities for the safe and appropriate disposal of asbestos containing materials.

This temporary option provided through a partnership between the RDN and the CVRD and enables residential and commercial loads of asbestos to be dropped off at the RDN’s Regional Landfill. Residential customers may also drop off asbestos at the RDN’s Church Road Transfer Station.

“We want to thank the Regional District of Nanaimo for helping provide a temporary asbestos disposal solution for our communities while a local solution is re-established,” explains Comox Strathcona Waste Management Service Board Co-Chair Mark Baker.

“This is an excellent example of how broader waste management issues that cross jurisdictional boundaries can be dealt with by working together. We are very appreciative of the Regional District of Nanaimo’s willingness to assist in the spirit of cooperation necessary to tackle such challenges,” explains Comox Strathcona Waste Management Service Board Co-Chair Will Cole-Hamilton.

Asbestos is accepted at the Nanaimo Regional Landfill on Tuesdays and Fridays between 10 am and 2 pm. Loads over 1,000 kg require a waste manifest and licensed hauler. To make an appointment at the Regional Landfill, please call 250-722-2044 ext. 3221. Residential loads to a maximum of 2 bags, per day, can be taken to Church Road Transfer Station in Parksville without an appointment. For hours of operation, please visit www.rdn.bc.ca/solid-waste-disposal-facilities

When dropping off asbestos, RDN and WorkSafe BC guidelines and regulations must be followed. Material must be double bagged in 6 mil poly asbestos bags, goose-neck tied, and sealed with duct tape. Material that is not properly bagged will not be accepted. For more information, please visit: www.rdn.bc.ca/asbestos-disposal
