On October 23, Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) staff and community partners successfully conducted a landfill facility emergency response and evacuation exercise at the Comox Valley Waste Management Centre.

“This exercise provided a valuable opportunity for our waste management team and partners to understand the impacts of a wildfire on landfill operations,” says Vivian Schau, Senior Manager of CSWM Services. “By simulating emergency scenarios, we improve our ability to respond effectively in real situations, protect vital infrastructure, and ensure the continuity of this critical service, while promoting shared learning for all participants.”

The exercise was collaboratively designed by CSWM and Comox Valley Emergency Management service partners, and involved participants and observers from various key organizations, including:

  • BC Wildfire Service Coastal Fire Centre;
  • BC Hydro;
  • Berry and Vale Contracting;
  • City of Courtenay Fire Department;
  • Comox Strathcona Waste Management staff;
  • Comox Valley Emergency Management;
  • Fortis BC;
  • GFL;
  • K’ómoks First Nation;
  • North Island 911 Fire Dispatch;
  • Pollinate Community;
  • Village of Cumberland Fire Department;
  • Calian Group (exercise consultants).

The purpose of the October 23 exercise was to strengthen partnerships and clarify roles and responsibilities during an emergency. Through collaborative discussions, participants shared valuable insights on potential hazards and events that could impact the landfill, enhancing overall emergency preparedness and joint response capabilities.

By conducting such exercises, CSWM reaffirms its commitment to ensuring business continuity during emergencies, minimizing potential service interruptions, and safeguarding the well-being of all the communities we serve.

CSWM extends its gratitude to the Regional District of Central Okanagan and the Glenmore Landfill staff for sharing their lessons learned from the 2023 McDougall Creek Wildfire, as well as all participants for their commitment to improving emergency preparedness and response in our community.

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management service area is located in the Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw, and Nuu-chah-nulth territories.
