As the Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) service looks ahead to the closure of landfill operations in Campbell River, the public is invited to an open house to learn more about the expected changes to waste handling, and what it will mean for them.
“With closure of the Campbell River Waste Management Centre anticipated within the next three to five years, we know that area residents have questions about what future waste management services in the Campbell River region will look like,” said Bob Wells, CSWM Board Chair. “We look forward to sharing the operational and closure plans to address residents’ questions about next steps.”
The drop-in style open house will provide more information about the transition from a landfill to a transfer station in the Campbell River area as the landfill reaches maximum capacity. The open house will also include an opportunity for the public to comment on the CSWM application for a substitution to landfill gas regulations. The CSWM is proposing an alternative approach to achieving the intent of the regulations in a way that aligns with the closure construction activities.
Staff and technical consultants will be on hand to answer questions and explain the closure process, including the landfill gas capture requirements.

The Comox Strathcona Waste Management service is a function of the Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) and is responsible for two regional waste management centres that serve the Comox Valley and Campbell River, as well as a range of transfer stations and smaller waste handling and recycling facilities for the electoral areas of the CVRD and the Strathcona Regional District. The CSWM service manages over 100,000 tonnes of waste and recycled material and oversees a number of diversion and education programs.
